Dr. Sompwe Lupwesha Mwansa
Anesthesiologist and Critical Care Specialist, Adult and Paediatrics
Dr. Sompwe Lupwesha Mwansa, FPATA (WFSA), MMed. ANAES (UNZA), MBChB (WITS), is an accomplished anaesthesiologist and critical care specialist with a focus on both adult and paediatric care. Her career spans extensive experience in providing comprehensive preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative anaesthetic and critical care services across diverse clinical settings. She has a subspecialisation in paediatric anaesthesia and critical care, having completed her Paediatric Anaesthesia Training at the University of Zambia with the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists from 2022 to 2023. Her dissertation focused on "The Handover, Admission and Discharge Practices Among Staff Working in the Paediatric Theatre Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit at the University Teaching Hospital."
Dr. Mwansa holds a Master of Medicine in Anaesthesia and Critical Care from the University of Zambia and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of the Witwatersrand. Her professional journey includes significant roles such as Consultant Anaesthesiologist and Critical Care Specialist at Ndola Teaching Hospital, where she oversees the administration and provision of anaesthetic care in theatres, ICU, and outreach services. She plays a pivotal role in complex cases and provides mentorship to registrars and non-physician anaesthesia providers. Dr. Mwansa is dedicated to education, having developed workshops and Continuous Medical Education activities for staff at Ndola Teaching Hospital.
Previously, she served as a Paediatric Anaesthesiology Fellow, gaining expertise in anaesthesia, pain management, and critical care for paediatric patients at various institutions, including rural outreach programs. Her contributions extend beyond clinical practice; she has been involved in curriculum development and served as a programme coordinator at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University and Lusaka Apex Medical University. Dr. Mwansa is actively engaged in professional associations such as the Society of Anaesthetists of Zambia, where she has held leadership roles including conference chairperson.
